Rubia Cordifolia commonly known as Manjishta or “Indian madder” is a branched climber with bristles. It is mainly found in the hilly areas of India. The roots of this plant are widely used for medicinal purposes. The blood detoxifying properties of its roots had been recognized in Ayurveda long ago. The principal constituents of medical significance are purpurin, munjistin, xanthopurpurin and Pseudopurpurin. Indian madder is an important ingredient in an Ayurvedic wine preparation called ‘Chadanasava’ which is usually prescribed for urinogenetal disorders.
