The ‘Pongam Tree’, scientifically known as Pongamia Pinnata, is one of the richest and brightest trees of India. This medium sized, ever green tree is planted for shade and ornamental purposes. Reference about the medicinal properties of this tree can be found in the ancient Rig Veda and Atharvana Veda. A dark coloured oil called ‘Pongamia oil’ is present in the seeds, which is responsible for its febrifuge properties. The powdered seeds are effective in curing tumors and rheumatism.
