Plumbago zeylanica, commonly known as “chitrak” or “lead wort”, is an herbaceous plant that is found in the tropical and subtropical countries of the world. It is one of the most powerful digestive and carminative herbs of Ayurveda. The primary bioactive chemical compound is ‘plumbagin’, which is present in the roots of the plant. This compound is responsible for its anti-bacterial, anti-cancerous and antibiotic properties. The root powder forms a constituent of Ayurvedic medicines like “Chitrak Haritaki” and “Kalyanagulam”.
