Plantago ovata, commonly known as desert Indian wheat, is a medicinal plant that was introduced to India by Indian Muslims. Plantago–seed mucilage is often referred to as husk, or psyllium husk. Clinically Psyllium acts as a bulk laxative and thus is most effective in forming feces. It efficacy in the treatment of constipation, diarrhea and hypercholesterolemia is well researched. FDA considers the usage of these seeds in functional and nutraceutical foods to be quite safe.
