Piper longum, commonly known as “long pepper”, is perennial herb, distributed in the tropical and subtropical regions of the world. The fruits of plant Piper longum known as Pippali/Pipri have been used in traditional Ayurvedic system of medicine to address various health problems since times immemorial. The fruits are rich in an alkaloid called piperine which enhances the bio-availability of diverse group of drugs. The fruits extract is present in some of the famous Ayurvedic formulations such as Pippalyasavam, Vardhamana pippali, Causasti pippal, etc.
