Operculina turpethum, commonly known as Trivrit, Turpeth or Indian Jalap, is a perennial aromatic creeper that exudes a milky juice. The thick black roots are of great medical significance and thus have been used in Ayurveda, Siddha and Unani system of medicine since ages. The purgative action of the root is mainly because of glycosidium resin and a glycoside named as turoethin. Apart from this, the roots also contain some volatile oils which are responsible for its therapeutic actions.
